Probio 5 is a supplement made by Plexus. With 5 beneficial probiotics and enzymes it can help maintain a healthy gut. How does it compare to other probiotic products?
Plexus ProBio 5 Review Summary: A dietary supplement containing 5 beneficial probiotics and 3 enzymes.
It is made by Plexus – a company with good reputation across the world for making dietary supplements and weight loss products.
The product itself is not my favourite but by no means should be overlooked. However there are few strange inclusions in the formula which I expand on later on this review.
My recommendation is for 1MD Complete Probiotic Platinum – a broad spectrum gut health supplement that is currently setting the standard in a busy market.

Plexus ProBio 5
ProBio 5 is a probiotic supplement that offers a little bit more than a lot of similar supplements do.
As well as providing five strains of probiotic bacteria, it also provides several digestive enzymes and some grape seed extract. There’s a couple of vitamins in there as well.
As with any other probiotic supplement, it contains live probiotic bacteria. This type of bacteria provides many health benefits.
Although it’s naturally occurring in the intestinal tract, many people choose to top-up their probiotic bacteria levels to improve their existing gut microbiome in an effort to improve their overall health.
Digestive enzymes also have an important role to play in the digestive process.
They are responsible for breaking down food into particles that are small enough to pass through the intestinal walls and into the blood.
People sometimes take supplements that provide extra digestive enzymes because they believe the additional enzymes will help them gain extra nutrients and energy from their food.
ProBio 5 contains the enzymes: Proteases, Cellulase, and Serrapeptase. And the probiotics: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus coagulans and Saccharomyces boulardii.
Who Makes ProBio 5?
Plexus is manufactured in the US for Plexus Worldwide. It’s a multi-level marketing (MLM) company that specializes in distributing health and wellness products.
Its first product was a fruit-flavored probiotic drink called Plexus Slim that was aimed at people with a desire to lose weight.
MLM companies work a little differently than other types of companies do. They are largely reliant on self-employed distributors who receive commissions on all their personal sales.
If they recruit other distributors, they are eligible for commission payments on the sales their “downline” distributors make as well.

What Is Plexus ProBio 5?
Plexus ProBio 5 is a pill-type supplement intended for daily use. It’s for people who are suffering from ailments that may be due to unbalanced gut bacteria.
How Does ProBio 5 Compare to Competing Probiotic Products?
If you are looking for a product that may help improve overall digestion, this one my be okay. However, it’s somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades that won’t be the best option for anyone who is simply looking for a good probiotic.
As far as probiotic products go, Plexus ProBio 5 is reasonably okay but it does not compare well to a lot of competing products.
The formulation only contains five strains of bacteria. A lot of probiotic supplements contain more. Different strains of bacteria have different virtues. Pills that contain fewer strains may not be as versatile as pills that contain more.
Is it Shelf Stable?
Some probiotics require refrigeration. Others do not. The need to refrigerate is an important consideration but Plexus fails to state if this one needs refrigerating or not.
Plexus ProBio 5 is formulated to deliver 2 billion colony-forming units (CFUs). In theory that should allow each pill to provide the gut with 2 billion units of bacteria that are capable of reproducing.
However, that’s how much live bacteria was present at the time of manufacture. By the time the pills are put to use the amount of bacteria in them may be considerably less. Especially if the pills are meant to be refrigerated and they are kept in a warm environment.

A More Detailed Look at the Formula
As you can see, this is anything but a typical probiotic blend. Let’s take a closer look at the things it may do.
Vitamin C + Vitamin B6
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that supports good health in many ways. Among other things, it’s a powerful antioxidant that reduces free radical toxins and protects against oxidative stress.
Vitamin C also boosts immune function. For that reason, it’s present in many over-the-counter medications that aim to treat colds and flu.
Vitamin B6 has several virtues too. As with all B Vitamins, it helps the body extract energy from food. It also helps the body to create red blood cells.
A blend of four digestive enzymes.
Proteases are the enzymes that break down protein into smaller particles (amino acids) the body can use.
Most enzyme blends also contain amylase (breaks down carbohydrates) and lipase (breaks down fats). This one does not. It provides three less likely enzymes instead.
Chitosanase is an enzyme that aids the conversion of glucosamine in partly acetylated chitosan. The form Plexus is using comes from the probiotic bacteria Bacillus coagulans. If there’s a clever reason for its presence, it would be nice if Plexus saw fit to explain.
Cellulase is another strange inclusion. It breaks down the cellulose provided by some plants. For obvious reasons, it’s often added to cattle feed. It’s not an enzyme the human body normally uses. [source]
Peptizyme SP is a branded form of serrapeptase.
Serrapeptase is a chemical. It comes from silkworms. Among other things, it is often used as a treatment for back pain and osteoarthritis.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a popular probiotic that helps with digestion. It’s also good for controlling the vaginal yeast that is often a side effect of antibiotics.
Bifidobacterium longum is another probiotic that promotes good vaginal health.
Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic bacteria that helps lower cholesterol. It lowers blood pressure too and can be effective for reducing inflammation.
Bacillus coagulans is not too common in probiotic pill formulations. You are more likely to find it in dairy products and probiotic foods. It may have value as a treatment for candida and diarrhea.
Saccharomyces boulardii is a species of yeast that’s sometimes used as a probiotic and may be effective for controlling antibiotic-related diarrhea.
Grape Seed Extract – Plexus doesn’t explain why this ingredient is present but grape seed extract is an antioxidant that may work well alongside Vitamin C.
How to Take ProBio 5 for Best Results
There don’t appear to be any hard and fast rules with this product. The dose is one capsule but plexus says you can take up to four doses per day.
However, if the capsules maintain their potency, one capsule per day should be enough.
Lots of probiotic products provide 2 billion CFU but it’s rare to have to take them more than once per day.
Side Effects and Other Health Considerations
Some customers say the pills made them feel bloated. This is actually quite a common reaction when you first introduce extra probiotic bacteria to the body.
It’s generally only in the initial stages though. In most cases, side effects of this nature subside after a few days.
One user also complains about the presence of yeast. She had not realized it was there and it caused an allergic reaction.
Plexus does not recommend using the product during pregnancy or while nursing a child.
Probiotic products can affect certain medical conditions and/or interact with some medications.
For that reason, if you have an existing medical condition, or would need to use Plexus ProBio 5 alongside medication, it makes sense to check with a doctor first.
This is especially important if you have a condition that weakens your immune system or have recently undergone any medical procedures that may do the same.
ProBio 5 Customer Reviews
Many customer reviews are good but a lot of people claim Plexus ProBio 5 did not provide any noticeable benefits at all. There are also a few reports of side effects.
The Best Place to Buy Plexus ProBio 5
Unless you have a local Plexus distributor, it’s always best to buy Plexus ProBio 5 directly from the manufacturer’s website. That way you can be sure you are purchasing the genuine product.
It’s possible to buy a bottle as a one-off purchase and pay $41.95. The other option is to purchase via autoship.
This brings the cost per bottle down to $35.95 but commits you to receive further shipments of pills. In all cases, there are shipping charges on top.
ProBio 5 Review Conclusion
Plexus ProBio 5 contains a lot of strange inclusions. Although grape seed extract is a healthy ingredient, it’s hard to say what role it will play in a product such as this. The same is true for Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.
The enzyme blend is also very unusual. It would probably have more to offer if the protein-digesting enzyme was combined with the other two enzymes humans use for digesting the main nutrients (protein, carbs, and fat).
As for the probiotic blend, it contains some good probiotic strains but Saccharomyces boulardii is another unlikely inclusion. There are superior alternatives Plexus could have used instead.
Plexus ProBio 5 is not an overly expensive supplement and it should have the potential to provide certain health benefits but it does not compare well with many other probiotic products.
